On 8 May, First Minister Mark Drakeford announced that the COVID-19 lockdown in Wales would be extended for a further three weeks. All non-essential shops and services were ordered to close, throughout the UK and police were granted powers to issue fines, send people home, especially persons suspected of being infected, and to break up gatherings of more than two people. The slogan "Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives" was used in England. on 26 March 2020, through The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020. on 23 March 2020, Boris Johnson announced a stay-at-home order effective immediately, though only legally effective from 1:00 p.m. The initial announcement was made by Boris Johnson, with agreement from the other three heads of government.
